Investing in the Future

It was a no-brainer for Solid Cactus to be a co-sponsor of the future. That's what we did as our part of the Eighth Annual Great Valley Computer Contest March 7th at College Misericordia. We got to invest in the next generation and then watch them in action. Teams of high school students created a website, a project management plan, a television commercial advertisement and a Power Point presentation explaining it all. Intrepid Solid Cactus project manager John Dawe attended and judged during the event.

These kids had it going on! As part of the event, Solid Cactus has offered a tour of our facilities to participants. The winning team from Wyoming Area School District, Wyoming, PA and the second place team Wyoming Seminary Upper School will be treated to a full day of mentoring at Solid Cactus with our design and programming teams. How good are these kids? The first place program was 100% CSS and it validated. We may actually try to hire the first place programmer!

This is a great deal for the student contestants, Solid Cactus, the Great Valley Technology Alliance and the region. The kids who enter get to see how real business life works and they get to show us they belong at the "adult table." Solid Cactus gets a first look at great young local talent. The Great Valley Technology Alliance realizes its mission of trying to establish a self-sustaining technology-based economy in Northeastern Pennsylvania. To the extent that high school kids can show us their skills and potential, this region is the ultimate winner. It is possible to build a new future on the bones of our coal mining past. We can't wait to see the parade of talent next year!
