One of the biggest factors in growing online sales this year will be promotions. Retailers are expected to be promotion heavy this year in their offerings in order to attract more online shoppers. The most anticipated and popular promotion of course is free shipping and 9 in 10 retailers are expected to offer that service this year. They are also expected to start offering it earlier than last year, some starting immediately after Halloween. It looks like mobile devices and tablets are going to be a major shopping channel for the 2011 holiday season. According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, 52% of smartphone users will use their devices to shop, conduct research, redeem coupons, and use apps to assist with their purchases. The biggest demographic that will be using these devices is young adults with 72% planning on using their phones and 86% using their tablets.
