Broadening broadband: FCC submits plan to congress

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Tuesday submitted a 10-year plan to congress that would make high-speed Internet available to 100-million homes in the United States. This is a big leap, as today only about half the nation’s population has broadband access. Internet Retailer reports what impacts this plan could have on eCommerce. Video and other rich media could become more widely used sales and marketing tools and in general, make browsing and buying online faster and easier (and even possible) for customers presently on dial-up. On the contrary, the article explains people without access to high-speed Internet are also likely to have lower income levels, meaning increased speed may not significantly increase sales. Still, one industry source told IR, “Every additional customer has some, even small, amount of buying power, so having them more online would be a good thing.” Learn more about the FCC’s plan.

Respondents were also able to fill in an answer to: What does it say about a brand if they are not involved with sites like Twitter and Facebook? One female answered, “It shows they are not really with it or in tune with the new ways to communicate with customers.” See the full study.
