Watch Your Language! If It’s Worth Saying…

You’ve heard that old expression, “you never get a second chance to make a first impression.” It is even more important on the internet to make that first impression as strong and positive as possible. To do that you need every weapon in your arsenal: great products, great web site, great writing. That’s right, even in this era of butchered email spelling, good writing still counts.

The Written Word LIVES!

My basic argument is that the written word is not only alive, it is thriving on-line. Last I checked the helpful sales clerk has been all but replaced by the helpful written instructions. The more clearly they are stated, the more concise they are, the more “helpful” they are, the more sales you’ll make.

Professional is as Professional does…

How often have you read something from a web site and noticed a misspelling or bad grammar or mixed tenses? You may not notice as many as a fussy writer like me, but I’ll bet our reactions are the same. It’s unprofessional. I can’t help but wonder what else is unprofessional about the web site. Does it stop with sloppy writing, or does it go over to ordering, delivery, product availability, credit card security? Show me a sloppy web site and I’m looking for the exit button. I’m sure I’m not alone.

When in Rome…

Good grammar and spelling don’t mean boring writing. In fact, since every e-commerce site is by definition a niche market, take advantage! Use the jargon and terminology of your industry. Talk to your insiders as insiders if you like. Remember, they probably didn’t wander onto your site by accident.

A Consistent Approach to E-commerce

Why did you contact Solid Cactus in the first place? You saw the big time web sites they’ve designed and loved what you saw. You realized that with a great web site, you could look as professional as a Fortune 500 company. Take the same attitude with your writing. Good writing reflects well on you and your company. And if you can’t get the job done with spellchecker, hire a pro. You proved quality counts when you hired Solid Cactus. Now, make every word count. Your customers will notice.
